LAKE WALES, FL — The Lake Wales Arts Council invites the community to a captivating evening of history, intrigue, and conversation on Thursday, August 6, 2026, featuring Florida civil trial attorney and author Kent Lilly, who will present the remarkable true story behind his acclaimed book, Double Indemnity.
The program begins with special opening remarks from Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, whose distinguished career in law enforcement offers a unique perspective as guests are introduced to one of Lake Wales' most fascinating—and often overlooked—historical mysteries.
Drawing from years of meticulous research, Lilly will explore the extraordinary life of Emmett Donnelly, a prominent Lake Wales attorney whose successful legal career became entangled in allegations of elaborate murder plots involving business partners and clients. Through historical records, courtroom accounts, and extensive investigation, Lilly brings to life a story that continues to raise compelling questions decades later.
Throughout the evening, attendees will gain insight into the historical facts surrounding the case, hear selected readings from Double Indemnity, and learn about the extensive research that shaped the book. Lilly will also discuss the unanswered questions that continue to surround the case and the lasting impact the events have had on the Lake Wales community.
The presentation will conclude with a live question-and-answer session, giving guests the opportunity to engage directly with the author and further explore one of Central Florida's most intriguing true-crime stories.
Whether you're a fan of Florida history, true crime, legal drama, or simply interested in discovering the hidden stories that have shaped Lake Wales, this special event promises an unforgettable evening of education, mystery, and discussion.
Complimentary refreshments and beverages will be served before and after the presentation, providing guests an opportunity to mingle with fellow history enthusiasts, meet the author, and continue the conversation in a welcoming atmosphere. Signed copies will be available for purchase.
